<p>Manchester United have officially confirmed the signing of Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa in a deal worth £35 million.</p>



<p>The 29-year-old Belgium international signed a five-year contract with the Red Devils to keep him at Old Trafford until June 2031, marking his arrival as the club’s second major midfield reinforcement of the summer following the £50 million capture of Andrey Santos from Chelsea.</p>



<p>Tielemans moves to Manchester after a sterling campaign in the Midlands, where he played a pivotal role under Unai Emery, famously scoring the opening goal in Villa’s UEFA Europa League final victory over Freiburg. Fresh off captaining Belgium to the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the midfielder brings top-notch discipline and line-breaking precision to Michael Carrick’s squad.</p>



<p>United’s Director of Football, Jason Wilcox, praised Tielemans’ “exceptional” consistency, leadership, and technical quality under pressure.</p>



<p>Tielemans recently shared with a football publication that joining the 20-time English top-flight champions is a proud moment: “Signing for such a special club feels incredible; it is the culmination of years of dedication since I first fell in love with football.”</p>



<p>As United structure their team for a return to Champions League football, the Belgian is expected to instantly elevate their tactical rebuild.</p>

<p>Despite Didier Deschamps’ side starting as heavy favourites, Luis de la Fuente’s men produced a tactical clinic, combining collective cohesion with dominant midfield control.</p>



<p>The breakthrough arrived after 20 minutes when Lamine Yamal pressured Lucas Digne into committing a penalty, which Mikel Oyarzabal confidently converted. Shortly after the interval, Spain doubled their lead when Pedro Porro combined with Dani Olmo before finishing beautifully.</p>



<p>France offered little response. Kylian Mbappe was neutralised by a disciplined defence that secured Spain&#8217;s historic sixth clean sheet of the tournament. The defeat, which marked Deschamps&#8217; final game in charge, left experts reflecting on the contrast between the two teams.&nbsp;</p>

<p>United States of America (USA) striker Folarin Balogun admitted he anticipated backlash after FIFA suspended his World Cup red card ban following political lobbying by President Donald Trump.</p>



<p>The Monaco forward was dismissed against Bosnia and Herzegovina, but disciplinary chairman Mohammad Al Kamali unilaterally deferred the suspension.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Balogun told an international publication: “My initial reaction was I was happy to be back in the team, but when I kind of started to reflect, I knew it was going to cause a lot of controversy, and I could almost see within my team-mates a bit of nerves, because it&#8217;s something that is so unique.”</p>



<p>The decision provoked fury. UEFA labelled the move “unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable”, while pundit Gary Neville described the reprieve as &#8220;a stain on FIFA&#8221;.<br><br>It emerged that President Trump had personally urged FIFA President Gianni Infantino to intervene, later admitting: “I didn&#8217;t know what a red card meant!”</p>



<p>Human rights group FairSquare has petitioned the International Olympic Committee over ethics violations. Despite the external drama, Balogun played in the USA&#8217;s subsequent 4-1 defeat by Belgium. Manager Mauricio Pochettino insisted the chaos was no excuse for their exit.</p>

Balogun Speaks Out Over Controversial FIFA Reprieve


<p>Erling Haaland expressed immense pride in his nation’s historic FIFA World Cup campaign despite a heartbreaking 2-1 quarter-final defeat to England after extra time in Miami on Saturday, 11 July 2026. The loss marked the end of a spectacular tournament trajectory for the Scandinavian side, who had reached the final eight for the first time in 28 years.</p>



<p>The Manchester City striker was one of the tournament&#8217;s biggest heroes, netting seven goals in five matches, including a crucial brace that eliminated five-time world champions Brazil in the round of 16. Reflecting on the campaign, Haaland focused on the cultural impact of their success. &#8220;How we put Norway on the map is maybe one thing that touches me the most,&#8221; the 25-year-old superstar stated. &#8220;I think this changes Norway, I think it changes me.&#8221;</p>



<p>The match was heavily impacted by controversial refereeing decisions. <p>Haaland, who was eventually substituted during extra time due to extreme exhaustion and a dead leg, praised former teammate Jude Bellingham for his match-winning brace. Looking ahead, he noted that the team’s unprecedented run will inspire future generations back home: &#8220;All this gives motivation to young people back in Norway that it&#8217;s possible to play on a big stage in the world with a Norwegian shirt.&#8221;</p>

Haaland Proud of Historic Run


<p>Manchester City have officially announced the coaching staff supporting new manager Enzo Maresca, who recently signed a three-year deal to succeed Pep Guardiola.</p>



<p>Highlighting the seven new appointments is the return of former City goalkeeper and English Premier League (EPL) Cup hero Willy Caballero, who joins as a first-team coach. Caballero, who made 48 appearances for the club between 2014 and 2017, previously played with Maresca at Spanish side Malaga and served as his assistant at Leicester City and Chelsea.</p>



<p>Roberto Vitiello, another former teammate of Maresca from their time at Palermo, has been named assistant manager. The backroom overhaul also includes the return of former academy coach Danny Walker, alongside Denis Silva. Additionally, Michele De Bernardin steps in as Head of Goalkeeping, Marcos Alvarez as fitness coach, and Javier Molina as tactical analyst.</p>



<p>To maintain some continuity following a period that saw the EPL title elude City for two consecutive seasons, set-piece coach James French and goalkeeping coach Richard Wright will retain their positions from the 2025-26 campaign. This specialist unit will look to implement Maresca’s tactical philosophy ahead of August’s pre-season tour of Asia.</p>
