<p>Chelsea have officially confirmed the signing of Italian international defender Marco Palestra from Atalanta in a deal worth a reported £47 million, including add-ons.</p>



<p>The 21-year-old defender has agreed to a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with an option for an additional year, becoming the first acquisition of the Xabi Alonso era.</p>



<p>The Blues hijacked a nearly completed agreement with Italian giants Inter Milan by offering a superior transfer fee and a more lucrative wage package. Palestra arrives with a burgeoning reputation, having been named Serie A Defender of the Year last season during an exceptional 37-game loan spell at Cagliari.</p>



<p>Statistically, the attack-minded defender led Europe’s top ten leagues for successful dribbles by a defender (70), and recently earned his first two senior caps for Italy. He has shown a great capacity to play as a conventional full-back or wing-back on either flank, and his tactical versatility will perfectly complement Alonso’s back-three system.</p>



<p>Palestra expressed his delight at joining Chelsea, citing the chance to work with Alonso as a decisive factor. His high-profile arrival is expected to kickstart a busy summer overhaul in West London after the club finished in a disappointing 10th place last season.</p>

<p>Paraguay produced a historic World Cup upset by eliminating four-time champions Germany 4-3 on penalties in the last-32 round, following a grueling 1-1 draw after extra time on Monday, 29 June.</p>



<p>The dramatic result marks Germany’s first-ever penalty shoot-out defeat in World Cup history.</p>



<p>During normal time, Julio Enciso headed Paraguay ahead before Kai Havertz equalised. Germany dominated with 75% possession and 21 shots, but manager Gustavo Alfaro’s heavily criticised, ultra-defensive tactics successfully frustrated the Europeans.</p>



<p>Under intense pressure, Paraguay’s backline held firm, and Germany even saw a late Jonathan Tah goal controversially disallowed by VAR for a foul.</p>



<p>In the shoot-out, Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gill became the hero, saving two spot-kicks. Reflecting on the triumph, Gill stated: “Thank God I was able to save two penalties. This is a privilege; we eliminated a champion.”</p>



<p>Conversely, Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann faces severe scrutiny regarding his future after a third consecutive disappointing tournament exit. “We didn&#8217;t do enough today,” Nagelsmann admitted.</p>

<p>The 2026 FIFA World Cup Group J finale erupted into an unforgettable spectacle on Saturday night, as Austria and Algeria played out a thrilling 3-3 draw at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium to both secure knockout berths.</p>

<p>For Algeria, the result was equally joyous as they advanced to the Round of 32 alongside the Austrians, knocking out Iran. &#8220;I&#8217;m absolutely over the moon,&#8221; Mahrez told FIFA. &#8220;The most important thing is that we&#8217;ve reached the next round.&#8221;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ronwen Williams led Bafana Bafana into uncharted territory on Thursday morning, 25 June, as South Africa qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout stages for the first time in their history.</p>



<p>A disciplined South Africa gained a 1-0 victory over South Korea in Monterrey, Mexico, and secured their progression to the Round of 32.</p>



<p>Hugo Broos’ squad had been largely written off following a 2-0 opening–match defeat to co-hosts Mexico and a gritty 1-1 draw against Czechia last week. Entering their final Group A fixture as clear underdogs, Bafana delivered a tactical masterclass.</p>



<p>After a scoreless first half featuring a vital save from Williams, Thapelo Maseko broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute. Maseko’s clinical second-half strike capped a stellar performance that earned him the FIFA Player of the Match award.</p>



<p>South Africa finished second in their group, mirroring the nostalgia of the nation’s iconic pre-2000 sporting triumphs.</p>



<p>Reflecting on the five-year project that built this organized side, Broos praised his team&#8217;s immense growth. Captain Williams expressed immense satisfaction with his youthful squad, noting that the future of South African football is secure.</p>



<p>“I am ecstatic and incredibly proud, especially considering what this side has endured. Dealing with doubters and the stress of playing at this elite level is never easy,” the 34-year-old goalkeeper told a local sports publication.</p>

South Africa Score Historic World Cup Victory


<p>Ghana defied the odds to secure a remarkable goalless draw against a determined England side in their 2026 FIFA World Cup Group L clash in Boston, Massachusetts, on Tuesday night, 23 June.</p>



<p>Despite being labelled by the media as the second-lowest-ranked team at the tournament, 64th-ranked Ghana delivered a football masterclass. Former Real Madrid boss Carlos Queiroz orchestrated a stubborn defensive line that successfully frustrated Thomas Tuchel’s side.</p>



<p>England completely ruled possession with a mammoth 78% and registered 19 shots, yet managed just four on target. Captain Harry Kane endured an especially agonising evening, culminating in a late miss over an open goal.</p>



<p>The Black Stars could even have snatched victory after being denied a strong late penalty claim when Ezri Konsa challenged Prince Adu, but the referee waved play on.</p>



<p>The historic evening saw Real Madrid superstar Jude Bellingham become the youngest player to reach 50 England caps at just 22 years old. However, he candidly admitted that he did not deserve his Player of the Match award, stating it belonged to Ghana’s defenders. While England remains top of Group L, they must now avoid defeat against Panama to guarantee passage to the round of 32.</p>
