<p>Let’s be honest: watching an actual game of football is fun, but it wouldn’t be half the experience it is today without the rivalries, fandoms and wildly enthusiastic crowds to cheer on the players. So what are some of the fiercest English Premier League (EPL) rivalries in recent years?</p>



<p><strong>Northwest Derby</strong></p>



<p>Let’s start at the top, with the biggest feud between two teams. Manchester United and Liverpool – who are both located in the Northwest region of England – have a rivalry that dates back to the Industrial Revolution, in which both cities competed against each other in industrial and economic endeavours.</p>



<p>The contention quickly moved over to the beautiful game, with citizens from each side expressing their competitiveness via the teams and their skilled players.</p>



<p><strong>Manchester Derby</strong></p>



<p>The Red Devils are involved in another feud with one of their neighbours, however this time it’s with one of the EPL’s top sides, Manchester City. As the two teams tend to leapfrog each other with their successes over the years, each victory for one side adds extra fuel to the rivalry fire for the other.</p>



<p><strong>Merseyside Derby</strong></p>



<p>The Merseyside derby is yet another clash that’s exacerbated by close proximity, as Liverpool’s Anfield and Everton’s Goodison Park stadiums are less than a mile apart from each other in Liverpool, England.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While the history books tell us this was once a friendly rivalry, the ferocious clashes between the supporters have made it clear that things have deteriorated between the two sides.</p>


Biggest Rivalries in the EPL


<p>Jack Grealish has provided a highly encouraging update on his rehabilitation following surgery for a season-ending foot injury.&nbsp;</p>



<p>The 30-year-old England international, who sustained a stress fracture in January, revealed that a recent check-up with his surgeon confirms his recovery is progressing well.</p>



<p>“I feel really good in myself now. I had a 10-week Zoom call with the surgeon, who said it couldn’t be looking any better at this stage,” Grealish told a sports publication earlier this week.</p>



<p>While the on-loan Everton midfielder’s physical progress is on track, he admitted the mental toll of being sidelined has been taxing, particularly while watching high-stakes fixtures like the Merseyside derby from the stands.</p>



<p>Before his injury, Grealish was a vital spark for David Moyes’ side, contributing two goals and six assists in 22 appearances.</p>



<p>However, his long-term future at Goodison Park remains foggy. While the Toffees are keen to make the move permanent, Manchester City’s reported £50 million valuation stands as a significant hurdle.</p>



<p>Off the pitch, Grealish continues his humanitarian work, extending his role as a principal ambassador for Special Olympics Great Britain for another three years, a cause he champions in honour of his sister, who has cerebral palsy.</p>

<p>The adage, “When a flower doesn’t bloom, you change its environment, not the flower”, could not be any more true for several footballers who have seen their skills and fortunes take a turn for the better after simply switching their position on the pitch.</p>

<p><strong>Gareth Bale – Left-back to Winger</strong></p>



<p>When Gareth Bale first started playing as a left-back for Southampton in 2006, he demonstrated that free kicks were something he knew how to do well. Then, Tottenham Hotspur offered him a contract in mid-2007.</p>



<p>The change of club, and switching to winger, opened up a whole new world for the Welshman. He was soon zooming around the opposition, scoring goals and winning awards, most notably as Wales’ most capped player and top goalscorer of all time.</p>



<p><strong>Phillip Lahm – Right-back to Midfielder</strong></p>



<p>He’s widely regarded as one of the finest full-backs in the history of the beautiful game, but Phillip Lahm is best known for providing Bayern Munich with a formidable midfield defence. He also led from the middle as the team captain during the German side’s various campaigns from 2011 to 2017.</p>



<p>His on-pitch manoeuvring and incredible stamina contributed greatly to his top standard style of play, which assisted Germany to win the 2014 FIFA World Cup, after which Lahm hung up his boots from international football.</p>



<p><strong>Gianluigi Buffon – Midfielder to Goalkeeper</strong></p>



<p>Who would have thought that a boy from a small town in Tuscany, Italy could go on to emblazon the footballing history books with his name? Gianluigi Buffon first started out playing as a young midfielder in 1993. He eventually put on the keeper’s gloves and the rest is history.</p>



<p>His nearly two-metre-tall frame and keen eye saw him play in 1 175 official record-setting matches across his three decades of professional football, netting him multiple awards and joining the pantheon of greats.</p>


3 Footballers Who Excelled After Changing Positions


<p>Barcelona have reportedly decided against triggering the £26.1-million buy option for Marcus Rashford.&nbsp;</p>



<p>While the 28-year-old Manchester United loanee has enjoyed a productive season statistically – tallying 12 goals and 13 assists in 44 appearances – his future at Camp Nou has grown uncertain following a series of high-profile lulls.</p>



<p>Club officials were reportedly unimpressed by Rashford’s inability to influence major knockout fixtures. He did not score any goals during Barcelona’s Champions League quarter-final exit and their Copa del Rey semi-final loss, both against Atletico Madrid. This dip in form during Raphinha’s injury absence has shifted Barca’s focus towards other targets, such as Julian Alvarez.</p>



<p>Despite the cooling interest in a permanent transfer, sources suggest that the Spanish giants may propose a second loan deal.</p>



<p>For Manchester United, offloading Rashford’s £315 000-a-week salary remains a priority for owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe as the club nears UEFA Champions League qualification. While Barca coach Hansi Flick continues to utilise Rashford for the final La Liga title push, the forward faces a crossroads: a return to an uncertain role at Old Trafford or a prolonged stay in Catalonia under revised terms.</p>

Rashford Stuck Between Barcelona Extension and Man U Return


<p>Liam Rosenior’s brief tenure at Stamford Bridge has descended into a historic crisis.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Despite an initial honeymoon period after being appointed as head coach in early January, the club has plummeted into its worst run of form since 1912, suffering five consecutive league defeats without scoring a single goal.</p>



<p>While Chelsea have often dominated possession and shot counts, a lack of clinical finishing and individual errors at the back have proved fatal.</p>



<p>The situation reached a breaking point following a demoralising 3-0 loss at Brighton. After the match, Rosenior abandoned his usual protection of the squad, stating, “That’s indefensible, that performance tonight.”</p>



<p>He further lamented the display as “the most difficult night” of his career.</p>



<p>The hierarchy is now reviewing his position at Cobham. Internal friction is mounting, with reports of a dressing-room disconnect and frustration over leaked lineups. Although injuries to stars like Cole Palmer have hampered his progress, the 41-year-old’s tactical shifts have failed to stop the rot.&nbsp;</p>



<p>With a Football Association Cup semi-final against Leeds looming, the board must decide if Rosenior can still inspire a squad that appears increasingly unconvinced by his methods. Under a cloud of historic failure, his 5½-year contract looks remarkably fragile.</p>
